Land Claim by the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council
On Thursday May 15 2022 the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council's (MLALC) land claim was approved for the unused portion of Yasmar Estate as compensation under the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 introduced by the Wran Government. The portion includes the heritage house, garden and unused east wing making up 1.5 hectares. Crown Land will continue management of the site as trustee for the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council (MLALC) until the ownership title is transferred.
In 2025 works continue by Crown Land to make safe Yasmar House and its outbuilding whilst a development application for the demolition of the east wing is being processed. The transfer of ownership will occur after works are completed.
In the meantime, the Haberfield Association continues with the garden maintenance under a licence agreement with Crown Land endorsed by the MLALC.
